What to expect in 2012…

December 31, 2011

Dear Friends, Family, and Fans of Bryan Gilles Comedy Magic!

I’m incredibly excited to announce some exciting new projects and shows slated for 2012!
My fiance (April) and I recently moved into our new home in Red Bluff, Ca. after seven months of actively building it. I’m learning fast that a new home comes with lots of new responsibilities and tasks to make it “our own.” I’m excited to finally have the optimal space to return to fabricating quality illusions not only for myself but other performers. One of my deepest passions in magic is the process of developing an illusion from a simple sketch to the final coat of paint. It will be fun to return to doing that after a four year break. I’m teaming up with the very talented Jeff Crank from “Crank’s Signs & Artistry” on two projects that will be a part of my stage show. Without tipping too much, I’ll be working with two of the deadliest animals found in the jungle for an exciting transposition; as well as, a popular “cutting in half” illusion. I’m super excited to be able to use the artwork with permission from the original owner Dave Womach and its artist (and fellow illusioneer) Chance Wolf on this illusion. Those in the magic-community know of this piece as “Modern Art.”
Speaking of Dave Womach, I’ll be adding one of his signature pieces to my show known as “OLEP” or “Orange, Lemon, Egg, & Parakeet (picture on the left).” It’s an exciting routine using each item in its title. The effect is simple and straight forward. The magician shows a birdcage with a parakeet inside. He removes the parakeet from the cage and vanishes it. He vanishes an egg. Next a lemon, but when he gets to the orange, he finds that he cannot vanish it. Taking out a knife, he cuts open the orange and inside he finds a lemon. Next, he cuts the lemon in half only to find the egg! He takes the egg, breaks it open inside the cage and the parakeet reappears.
I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am to be working with this illusion as it is my favorite magic routine and became an illusion I lusted over shortly after seeing it in Dave’s show. I’m definitely going to be a proud owner and hope to give this piece many more years of “stage time.”
Needless to say, there will be plenty of eye-candy in the new show and I’m really looking forward to presenting it as soon as I can!
So far, we are looking at February to be a big month for shows available to the public! I’m currently working with a local school to put on a fundraiser and night of magic. I’ll keep everyone updated about it as the project unfolds.

Please check back often as 2012 makes its way…

Until then… May each of your days be filled with wonder, excitement, and most importantly- MAGIC!

~Bryan Gilles

“After reviewing several of Bryan’s photo’s on his website, I got a feel for what he was looking to have made. He requested that they blend within his show’s color scheme; yet stand out enough to fit within the routine he would be performing- in this case, it was for  “The Vanishing Bandanna Trick.” I made several sets for him and the outcome was even a better match then I had expected ”    – April Havens

Glenn County Fair 2010

June 4, 2010

-2010 Glenn County Fair-

Now that I’m home and have had a little time to rest, I figured I would share video and some photos taken from my performances at the Glenn County Fair in Orland, Ca.  It was a fun experience and honor to be able to present my magic show to people who don’t live to far from me. I had the opportunity to share my passion with many fair-goers in a total of fourteen shows in under four days. This is a market I hope to really dive into in 2011. I tell you what though…it’s a whole different animal than what I am use to. The great outdoors, random “acts of God,” and the occasional heckler with the cold beer in hand are just a few of the obstacles I learned real quick about. I’m so excited to restructure my show to better fit this market and provide much more for the next year of shows!

I’d like to give a special thanks to John Gentry and the Swan Brothers Circus (sbcircus.com) for making me feel so welcome…

The International Brotherhood of Magicians

April 3, 2010

After years of not really belonging to any specific magic organization other then the International Magicians Society, I’ve decided to become a member of IBM. I’ve kind of avoided the different fraternities of magicians because I really could care less about performing in front of other magicians. They are not the ones paying my bills or booking my act. I’ve decided to go with IBM because of the many things they have to offer! One of them is the $1,000,000 liability insurance coverage. This is worth having by itself not to mention the monthly publication of the Linking Ring Magazine. I look forward to being a member of this amazingly huge fraternity of other magicians and upholding the values and code of ethics as expected for its members.

Lack of Motivation…

February 5, 2010

I don’t know if it was the extremely busy holiday season, issues with my divorce process, or just the weather… It seems my motivation tank is running on empty these days.  I was going to tackle 2010 with 115% full force; however, magic has been on the back burner for me as I’m occupied with a move, college plans, and career goals. I’ve started reading a book on the psychology of magic and have found that my motivation has picked up a little bit. To my magician entertainment peers reading this, what do you guys do to help rekindle the flame when you are burnt out?

Leave That To The Professionals

December 24, 2009

Within the last year or so, I’ve learned the value of outsourcing for professional help.  When I say “professional help,” I’m talking about the people who are incredibly good at what they do.  I’m sure after Googling for tutorials on how to build a website or design my own business cards or even attempting to record my own voiceovers would result in mediocre results and meet my needs as a semi-professional entertainer; however, I am looking to broaden my horizons and break out as a professional comedy magic entertainer. All the time I would have put forth in learning to develop a website or making Low-Fi recordings of my show’s introduction would be wasted on just that; therefore, I would rob myself from the time needed to fine tune my show.

I feel fortunate to have used the services of some extremely talented people and the results have exceded my expectations tremendously.  Some of my sources include:

  • SpikeSperris.com – Website, Promotional Material Design (business cards, posters, etc.)
  • Ron Geisecke- Voice Over (show intro) Work
  • ZooPrinting.com – Printing of my business cards, banners, posters, and glossy photos, etc.
  • Harried’s Music Supply- All of my PA System/ Sound needs

“Whatcha Workin’ With?” (My Sound System)

December 23, 2009

Its a weird thing.. several performers have asked me what kind of  equipment I use for my sound for shows.

As previously mentioned, I want to help others through this blog… I figured I could share some of my personal sound set-up.

  • Fender Passport PD-150 Plus
  • Shure PGX4 UHF Receiver
  • Shure PGX1 UHF Body Pack Transmitter
  • Shure PG30 Headset Mic
  • Virtual Soundman 7.5
  • Sony MZ-N51CK MiniDisc Player/ Recorder

It’s a pretty basic set-up and has been reliable for me through many shows.

I hope this will help others with constructing a basic sound system for professional-quality sound in their shows!

Thank You!

“If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants…” -Isaac Newton

Using the understanding gained by major thinkers who have gone before in order to make intellectual progress- is a common theme behind anyone at a respectably successful level.  Several of my peers within the so called “magic industry” have become un-sung heros in a way.  Witnessing their success in action has not only been inspiring to me but has helped rekindle the flame when I lose sight of my goals and burn out.

I owe many thanks to Wade LIVE, Dan Sperry,  Dave Womach (David DaVinci) ,  Ron Geisecke and Rober William Baffle for the continual inspiration and moral support (both directly and indirectly) as I move more towards accomplishing my dreams.
